Updates to Paint the Town Online Registration

Soon we'll start taking registrations for Paint the Town corporate teams (don't worry—if your employer isn't sponsoring a team, you'll sign up during general registration in a few weeks). We wanted to let you know about a few new things in the online sign-up form this year.

1. You must check a box that you're age 18 or older. All volunteers must be adults—we're sorry, but you won't be able to bring minor children to volunteer with you.

2. You'll also check a box to acknowledge that you'll attend morning registration June 13 and be available the whole day. (You'll be through painting by 4 and possibly earlier.) We're grateful volunteers want to do whatever they can for however long they can, but due to the intricacies involved in holding Paint the Town, we can't accommodate half-day volunteers for this event.

3. At the bottom of the volunteer sign-up form, you'll type in the name and phone number of an emergency contact person. Please make sure you give us both the name and the number, or we'll track you down:) This way, we'll have this important information easily accessible in our volunteer database.

We'll e-mail registered volunteers with event details, times, directions, etc. the week before the event, but look for regular updates in your in-box.

Questions? See our volunteer FAQs. Thank you for being part of Paint the Town!

43 Houses!

We're thrilled to announce that Paint the Town volunteers will give 43 homes in Price Hill a fresh coat of paint this June 13!

During this economic depression, many families are having a hard time caring for their homes. Your help as a Paint the Town volunteer will provide some much-needed maintenance and let these 43 homeowners devote their limited funds to making other repairs. You'll also lift the spirits of an entire community.

Look for anouncements about corporate and general volunteer registration.

"Yellow Shirts"

This week, we're finishing selection of homes to be painted and planning the first meeting of team leads. We love team leads (a.k.a. "Yellow Shirts")! They're a vital part of Paint the Town, with a huge role in pulling off the invent. Some of what they do

Stay in frequent contact with the owner of that teams' house, getting to know the person and helping to select paint colors.

Help assess and complete necessary prep work (power washing, scraping, trimming shrubbery, etc.).

Help determine number of volunteers needed, painting strategy, equipment needed.

Help recruit volunteers (for corporate teams).

Keep event planners in the loop.

Select side leads to coordinate volunteers on each side of the house on the big day.

Pick up supplies and make sure they get to the house.

Show up super-early at Paint the Town to get everything ready for volunteers to paint.

Manage all the volunteers, paint and supplies on the day of the event. Make sure we leave a nice neat yard behind.

Deliver supplies to storage so they can be re-used next year.

Thanks to these guys and gals for taking an important leadership role and helping make Paint the Town happen!

Get to Know Price Hill

Since we’ll be painting homes in Price Hill this year, we thought we’d tell give you a few history tidbits about the community …

The first home on Price Hill was probably William Terry’s log cabin in 1791. The area was called Bold Face Hill after a local Indian chief.

Price Hill is named for Gen. Rees E. Price, who bought and developed large parts of the hill where wealthy residents settled to escape the noise and pollution of the city. At first it was called "Price's Hill.”

The Price Hill Incline, completed in 1874, carried people from Lower Price Hill up 374 feet to where the Queen’s Tower condos are now. It operated until it broke in 1943.

A ride on the Incline, dinner at the Price Hill House, and viewing Cincinnati below made up a fashionable evening’s entertainment in the 1880s and 1890s.

In 1897, a tuberculosis sanitorium opened on Guerley Road. The hospital was known as the Cincinnati Tubercular Hospital, then the Hamilton County Tuberculosis Sanatorium.

Land overlooking the Ohio River was purchased for Mt.
Paint the Town FAQ: Home Selection

Many Paint the Town volunteers wonder how the homes they’re painting are chosen.

Well, that process is going on right now. Here’s how it works: Homeowners in Price Hill could complete applications to have their houses painted starting in December. Applications, which ask questions to assess need, income level, and scope of work required, were available online, at local businesses, and through the community organizations Price Hill Will and Santa Maria Community Services.

Paint the Town committee members interview applicants and select homeowners based on need, feasibility of painting the house, and the impact volunteers would be able to make.

See some more common Paint the Town questions here.

We're hoping for a crowd of Paint the Town volunteers this year, so we're looking for a few of you to help register all those people on the morning of Paint the Town.

You’d collect waivers, sign people up on teams for each house, direct them, etc. You'd have to wake up a little early June 13, but you’ll get first crack at the coffee, meet new people, and you can still paint.

E-mail pttvolunteer@givebackcincinnati.org for more info.
